So, this is the first in a series of blogs where I try and explain the trials and tribulations of starting your own bike building business. Its difficult to know where to start. Do we talk about the necessary skills needed to build bikes, or vendors? How about understanding the physics of the bike – how the roll ratio of front and rear tires?
Its a very large set of questions and needs, but the critical one is passion.
Do you have enough energy and passion to really give everything you have to start this venture?
Does your partner / family share this passion, and will they support you no matter what?
Those are questions that you have to ask that will ultimately guide you towards starting, or simply keeping, this passion as a hobby. For me, it was all about viability and passion. My passion was total. I had to do it, and I had to leave my job. To be clear, most of the people I worked with became family, but the business had evolved into something I didn’t believe in.
As for viability – I am someone who likes to leap a little. Taking chances is in my DNA, but in order for you to be able go from nothing to something, you have to be supported. Thats where my wife came in. She has always, and continues to support me in this insane idea. And I continue to try and make her proud of me every day. So, I am going to start (in the next blog) with where I started – tools and licenses. I hope this helps you as you read this, and feel free to contact me any time if you have questions. Later!
